Last Spring, Aena awarded Eurofins Megalab, the leading clinical analysis company in the Spanish market, the installation of laboratories to perform COVID-19 diagnostic tests at twelve Spanish airports. Eurofins Megalab is now at the following airports: Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Alicante-Elche, Valencia, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, Tenerife Sur, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, César Manrique-Lanzarote and La Palma.

Since their opening in the second quarter of 2021, these laboratories, which are staffed by over 100 health professionals and have the capacity to serve 6,000 travellers a day, have already performed close to 160,000 COVID tests. By nationality, Germans are the service’s main clients, followed by Spaniards and French. The British may rank in the top 3 once the British government softens the restrictions for returning from Spain.

At this time an agreement has been reached with AENA to expand the areas assigned, in order to double the service capacity (up to 12,000 patients daily) and to install laboratories in two more airports: Tenerife Norte and Santiago de Compostela.

Ranking of airports with the highest activity

Up until the first week of July 2021, of the 12 airports where Eurofins Megalab has set up a centre, the Palma de Mallorca centres is where most tests have been performed to date (close to 50,000 tests), followed by the Tenerife Sur Airport (over 15,000 tests) and Ibiza (close to 11,000 tests). Of these twelve airports, currently the ones with the highest demand for testing are Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona (recently opened). The antigen test is the one that users most request from among all of the tests offered by the laboratory, in all airports.

In the midst of the vaccination campaign in Spain, the COVID-19 detection tests are still crucial in the early detection of asymptomatic cases and to reactivate mobility and the economy in our country. These tests are also required to enter regions such as the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. They are also required in order to enter most countries of the European Union and the rest of the world, both for Spaniards who are travelling to those countries and for tourists who, after their sojourn in Spain, plan on returning to their countries of origin.

Eurofins Megalab, a leading clinical analysis company in the Spanish market, maintains its commitment to fighting transmission of SARS-CoV-2, significantly contributing to the recovery of air traffic in our country, a key element to reactivating the economy and to returning to tourism activities. Proof of this are the agreements reached with numerous European travel industry companies (such as Lufthansa Group / Eurowings, TUI, Last Minute, Barceló Group, among others) to provide safety when travelling.
